We estimate Layla’s date of birth around 2/26/2013, so she’s still just a young pup with a lot of growing to do. At 6 months, she was already over 50 LBs, so it’s a safe bet she will be a good-size adult, probably at least 80 LBs and potentially more. When she first came into SPIN, we thought that Layla was a Great Pyr/Anatolian Shepherd mix, but as she has grown, her foster family has begun to think that most likely, the Shepherd portion of her heritage is Belgian Malinois or perhaps German Shepherd.
Layla loves playing with the other dogs in her foster family – puppies and adults, large dogs and toy breeds too. She loves splashing in every small body of water she finds, including a plastic wading pool, livestock watering tubs, and a large stainless steel water dish in the house (!), but so far, she hasn’t been brave enough to get into the in-ground swimming pool at her foster home. She has grown up with kittens, free-range chickens and miniature dairy goats, and has proven safe with all of them. She seems to have a natural instinct to want to herd the goats back into the pen any time they are out grazing. In spite of the fact that she loves the great outdoors, Layla is also very happy as a couch potato. She has learned how to use her nose to open the back door of her foster home, and she frequently lets herself inside when she’s ready to nap under the AC. We think Layla would do best with an active family and at least one other dog in the home. She would certainly be happy on a small farm, though she’s too social to be happy as an LGD. She is house-trained and doesn’t mind being put in a crate for short periods. Layla is still a young puppy, so she hasn’t yet outgrown the chewing stage; shoes, CD cases, newspapers, books – basically anything within her reach is fair game as far as she is concerned.
Spin Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere.
All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. Please go to our website www.SpinRescue.org and fill out an application for this great Great Pyrenees!
