When she first came to rescue, this dog was so under-weight that her foster family named her Thin Lizzy. Thanks to a healthy diet and lots of love, Lizzy has filled out quite a bit, but her frame is slimmer than the average Pyr, leading her foster family to speculate that the other contributor to her DNA could be a slender hound, such as an Afghan Hound or a Saluki. Or she could be mixed with one of the Collie breeds, or an Australian Shepherd. Only a DNA test would tell for sure. But whatever the contributors to her gene pool may be, Lizzy is a sweet and very pretty dog who is likely to always be a “pocket Pyr” weighing no more than 60 – 65 LBs. We estimate her date of birth around September 2011, so Lizzy is a young adult who still has the energy and activity level of her youth, but who has outgrown the annoying habits of a puppy. She is reliably house-trained. Lizzy is a very social dog who loves playing with the other dogs in her foster home, large and small, puppies and adults. She also gets along with the kittens in her foster home. Lizzy currently lives on a small farm, where she shows a strong guardian instinct, barking at predators in the area, such as coyotes and owls. Lizzy has a strong, loud bark, and when she hears a sound that she interprets as a threat to her family, she barks, regardless of whether she is inside or outside, so we don’t recommend her for apartment or condo dwellers. She loves playing in the yard, and is not averse to getting dirty when the weather creates mud-puddles in the yard. She also loves napping in the house, especially during hot summer days.
Lizzy tested positive for heartworms, but has been doing well on the slow-kill treatment. Another SPIN Pyr in her foster home went through the same treatment and tested negative for heartworms at his first annual check-up, so we are optimistic than by summer 2014, Lizzy will be free of this problem.
Spin Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere.
All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. Please go to our website www.SpinRescue.org and fill out an application for this great Great Pyrenees!
