Farley is the sweetest and gets along well with the other dogs and cats in his foster home!

He walks well on a leash. He’s a little nervous for car rides. He is crate trained but it’s not really necessary.

He loves to be near people and lay nearby watching everything going on. He rarely barks.

Funny story: His injured leg did not stop him from stealing some “Fresh Pet” dog food thawing on the kitchen counter!

Farley's story: A concerned citizen brought Farley to the Arlington shelter after finding him as a stray. The Arlington Animal Services staff quickly realized he had a significant injury under a bandage on his back leg, and jumped to action to start treating him and trying to find his family. It was clear someone had been caring for him and he was TERRIFIED in the shelter.

AAS Staff were able to connect with the owner and learned the full story of what happened. Farley had been found was hanging by his back leg off the backyard fence after trying to jump over. His injury was significant, you could see through the open wound a complete tear of the Achilles tendon.

After a long and difficult talk with the owners, the hard decision to surrender was made due to severity of the injury and home environment factors. This was an incredibly sensitive and difficult decision made in the best interest for the dog.

Once surrendered into their care, AAS reached out to all rescue partners and made a plea online for help to save Farley's life. His situation was not an easy one, he would require a committed foster and expensive medical care. They maintained their positivity and mission, “Working together as a community, we WILL improve the lives of animals.”

And they did it! They emailed us at SPIN Rescue, we were tagged in their online posts, and his story made the way into the heart of one of our long-time medical fosters. SPIN volunteers worked with AAS staff and we picked him up over the weekend!

Farley is doing great in his SPIN foster home and has an appointment early next week for surgery evaluation. We will be sure to post an update soon, but wanted to give credit to Arlington Animal Services for not giving up on Farley.

Earlier this week our new medical rescue, Farley, was examined by our orthopedic veterinarian who also consulted with two other specialists. It was decided that the best course of action is to amputate his injured leg.

The veterinarians agreed that due to the extent of the damage, the extremely long and difficult recovery period and the likelihood of re-injury, a repair was not in his best interest. At this point the injured leg is just getting in his way and leaves him at an increased risk of infection.

The good news is that Farley is already walking well on three legs!  He will have a full and complete life with a forever family sooner rather than having to go through extensive and sometimes isolating recovery.

SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  Adoption fees are $300 for dogs under 1 year old, $250 for dogs 1-7 years old, $200 for dogs over 7 years old. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention.
