Meet Dakota - when he perks his ears and wags his tail there is just no cuter boy out there. He is a sweet soul, a big lumbering kid that loves everyone. If you pet him he'll stand perfectly still and lean in your direction.
Dakota is about a year and a half old, and weighs 70 pounds (yep, he is finished growing). He is deaf (we think he was born this way but we're not sure), but it doesn't slow him down a bit. He reads a lot from the body language of people and other dogs. He gets along great with dogs of all sizes, as a matter of fact he ideally needs a home with another dog as I think he'd be happiest with a friend. He is fine around cats, he just sniffs them but doesn't seem too interested.
Dakota needs a home that is ready for the time and attention his training will require, he has learned the hand signals for "sit" already, is pretty good with "down", we have a symbol for "eat" (he learned that one really fast), and he comes running when you stoop down and open your arms (this means "come" to him)! I know of a great trainer that I'll put his new home in touch with to help get them started. There are also Yahoo group lists for advice and support for working with deaf dogs.
It is very important that Dakota will always have to be on a leash when he is outside his home.
He is crate trained and house trained, he will chew if left alone so we crate him when we're gone, but when we're home as long as he has his toys and chewies he is a happy kid.

Anyone interested in our dogs will be required to fill out an adoption application which includes a home visit by one of our volunteers. For this reason we do not adopt to anyone living out of the DFW area.
All our dogs will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and heartworm free. We do ask for a $150 adoption donation. To fill out an application on line, just go to www.friscohumanesociety.com and click on the Adoption Application link.
