Meet Drifter! He was found on a ranch outside Mexia, Texas watching a pointing dog field event that was underway. He drifted in before anyone could see where he came from and, once he arrived, he drifted into the hearts of all who saw him, giving rise to his name. Drifter knew how to shake on the day he was found and offered his paw. He appeared stoic, stately, kind, friendly, and in need of humanity.
Someone shared that an elderly man who recently passed away and who lived nearby had a dog like this. A friend took the dog; however, no one knew the name or location of this friend. People speculated that Drifter returned to the now abandoned home where he once lived to look for his person. Finding no one there, he drifted on. He had no collar nor chip. He was thin, muddy, flea bitten, with cuts on his face, and a fungal infection on one elbow (now resolved). Efforts to locate his owner were unsuccessful.
Sweet Drifter is a neutered, microchipped male dog who appears pure bred. He is all white, with long hair, and dark brown eyes. He had a minor ear inflammation that was treated. The vet removed a benign cyst from inside Drifter's neck. The cyst was likely caused by a foreign object (such as a thorn or grass seed) piercing this area. Due to the above, Drifter has visited the vet often and is extremely well-behaved there. He readily sits on the scale and waits patiently in the lobby. He charmed the entire staff with his presence and was subsequently deemed one of their all-time favorite patients.
Drifter is estimated to be between 3 and 4 years old and weighs 95 pounds. He is heartworm negative. He rides in the car well. He is leash trained, enjoys walks, and understands “no.” He loves to be stroked, massaged, and groomed.
Drifter appears to have been loved and cherished at one point in his life, laying a positive foundation for his future. He's blessed with a sweet, gentle, easy-going nature and should make a great family dog or a wonderful companion for a couple or single adult. He enjoys other dogs thus would do best with at least one other dog.
Drifter is housebroken and will stay behind a baby gate when asked, not needing a crate. He does bark; however, there’s normally a reason. He has a stubborn steak thus doesn’t always come when called. Drifter has learned to sit for his food and treats. He has learned how to “wait,” allowing others to go first. He seeks love and attention.
When his foster parent arrives home, opening the back door, Drifter bounds across the yard happily, rubbing his body along the fence and shrubs and across tree trunks. He then dives into the lawn rolling around for a bit. Drifter enjoys having a yard. His energy level is relatively low; however, he frequently bounds across the yard with giant bursts of energy.
In his foster home, Drifter lives with 5 dogs and a cat. He is friendly with all. Drifter is good with the neighbor’s dog and the neighbors. He’s equally good with men and women. Drifter hasn’t been around children yet; however, based on his behavior, he would be expected to do well with children 5 and up.
TO DRIFTER’S FUTURE FAMILY: He is a treasure, the type of dog who’ll be remembered with great love and admiration long after he’s left this earth.
