Meet Barclay! This handsome, gentle boy was born around 9/1/2016. He is working on gaining weight to reach his ideal of around 95 pounds.
When he came into rescue, he was severely underweight, running a dangerously high fever, and had other health issues. The veterinarian even required that Barclay put on ten pounds before he could be vaccinated safely.
Despite his circumstances at that time, his rescuers reported that he was already amazing! They could see that he would turn into a wonderful, loving companion dog. He quickly embraced their loving care and became healthy.
Barclay can be quite timid and reserved at first, but once he feels comfortable, he really opens up and reveals his sweet, loving self. He is very affectionate and gentle with everyone he meets.
He also has an adorably playful side and likes to run around in the yard. He likes to play with toys, particularly rubber/plastic toys such as Kongs and rubber ducks. He even likes to play with his people by raising his front legs in the air, but not making contact.
He is shy upon meeting new dogs, but he does well when they are very welcoming. His foster fur siblings are teaching him how to play. In his forever home, he hopes for an active doggy sibling to play with.
Barclay is very smart and already knows several basic commands. He seems to have not had any prior leash training, so he is just learning the joys of walking around the neighborhood to meet all kinds of wonderful people and experience lots of new smells. He takes some coaxing to get leashed up and out the door, but once outside he walks decently well. He still needs some work learning to heal and follow the direction you want him to go, but for the most part he is well behaved and doesn't pull.
He is completely housetrained. In his foster home, there are no issues with him having free reign of several rooms while no one is home.
While he is crate trained, he does not enjoy it at all. And since he can be trusted alone in the home, there is no need for a crate.
He rides nicely in a car, lying happily in the back and laying his head on the front console, so he can see a little and get head pets a lot.
He barks on occasion when he is outside or if he sees something outside that he wants to go visit. He likes to scold squirrels that dare come into his yard.
